My Findings-
Website 1 provided many reasons why The battle of Coral sea was significant. Some of those reasons being that it was a new type of naval warfare, Tactical and strategic implications, and also the effect it had on Midway. The battle was the first naval engagement in history in which the participating ships never sighted or fired directly at each other. Instead, manned aircraft acted as the offensive artillery for the ships involved. Thus, the respective commanders were participating in a new type of warfare, carrier-versus-carrier, with which neither had any experience (Website 1). This was a big deal because it opened up new doors that weren't possible in warfare before. Both sides publicly claimed victory after the battle. In terms of ships lost, the Japanese won a tactical victory by sinking an American fleet carrier, an
oiler, and a destroyer – 41,826 long tons (42,497 t) – versus a light carrier, a destroyer, and several smaller warships – 19,000 long tons (19,000 t) – sunk by the Americans. Lexington represented, at that time, 25% of U.S. carrier strength in the Pacific. The Japanese public was informed of the victory with overstatement of the American damage and understatement of their own (Website 1). This shows how much damaged was caused, and for one of the first times in history, both sides claimed they had won the battle. "One of the most significant effects of the Coral Sea battle was the loss of Shōkaku and Zuikaku to Yamamoto for his planned showdown with the American carriers at Midway. The Japanese believed that they sank two carriers in the Coral Sea, but this still left at least two more U.S. Navy carriers, Enterprise and Hornet, which could help defend Midway (Website 1). This is important because it shows how much this one battle affect the entire war as a whole.
THE FULL SIGNIFICANCE of the joint American-Australian Naval and Air victory in the Coral Sea Battle was not generally realized until its historical and geographical importance became evident in the march of events towards the downfall of Japan (Website 2). This shows how many didn't think of this battle as very significant until after the war, when they realized the great affect it had on many more things. The Coral Sea Battle was the first serious check to the amazingly rapid series of Japanese successes, which had advanced Japanese power well south of the Equator. The margin between victory and defeat was extremely small. Reliable authorities have stated that had the Japanese been successful, our position in New Guinea would have proved untenable and the whole of the north-east Australian coastline would have been open to invasion (Website 2). This shows it significance by showing what would have happened if this battle did not happen. It had a great affect on the war that many didn't expect. Without the victory of this battle, we would have been opened to invasion, which could have led to the loss of the war. "The Coral Sea Battle is now rightly recognized as a landmark in the history of Australia. It marks the nearest approach of hostile forces in strength to the coastline of Australia and our deliverance from threatened invasion. The significance of the Coral Sea Battle in relation to the safety of Australia is clearly seen by a glance at the map (Website 2).
Website 3 gave many more simple of The battle of The Coral Sea and why it was so important. "It was the first pure carrier-versus-carrier battle in history as neither surface fleet sighted the other. Though a draw, it was an important turning point in the war in the Pacific because, for the first time, the Allies had stopped the Japanese advance (Website 3) As website 1 also stated, this battle provided a new type of naval warfare. This opened many doors for war for the future. "Before the battle, the Japanese had enjoyed a continual string of victories while afterwards, it suffered an almost continual series of defeats, including at Midway one month later, a major American victory (Website 3). Although we cannot completely assume we began defeating the Japanese after this battle, it is a possibility. Whether we damaged them so much in this battler or not, it started a winning streak for the united States.
